Karma? You can see the words "exalt" and "smite" on the left of each post, under the members name and avatar. There is also a tally for karma, with a number for each member.
What do these mean and how do we use them?
The "exalt" and "smite" buttons are ways of either applauding (exalting) or booing (smiting) a particular post that someone may make. When someone makes a post that is particularly insightful, witty, moving or has done a really good job of saying something, it's appropriate to express your appreciation by exalting them. To do this, you go to their post, and hit the "exalt" button under their name. Their karma will increase by 1. It's a way of saying "good job!".
The "smite" button is just the opposite. If someone posts something that is just discourteous, downright nasty, or outside the bounds of respect, we can smite them. This button is rarely used here, since these kinds of posts just don't usually appear, and when they do, it is more appropriate to notify one of the MB facilitators or moderators to address the situation. We can then remove the post or ask that person to delete it themselves.
You can see by the total karma points which members have gained the appreciation of their peers for some of their posts. Some examples of posts that usually draw karma points are long ride recaps, educational posts on mechanical or other topics, moving pieces that capture the spirit of the members in one way or another.
We want to keep this board informational and fun, so if you have any questions on the karma issue, please post it or PM one of the moderators or MB facilitators.
